Needs Statement: Domestic violence (DV), also known as intimate partner violence, is a pattern of abusive behavior that keeps one partner in a position of power over the other through the use of fear, intimidation and control. DV is a cultural and societal problem, and not a women’s problem or a men’s problem as many people come to believe. The problem also stems from the lack of adequate and consistent training for persons helping survivors escape their situation. Therefore, the solution to prevent and eliminate domestic abuse must be multi-dimensional, diverse, and comprehensive (Coulter, 2009). Domestic violence is the leading cause of serious injury to women. Data shows that in 2014 New York City Police Department responded to over 282,000 domestic incidents, where 63 were family-related homicides. There was also a 22.3% increase from 2013 or over 54,600 client visits to the New York City Family Justice Centers. Between 2001 and 2012, there were 864 domestic violence homicides in New York City, where the definition of intimate partner homicides was expanded in 2009 to include the homicides by boyfriend/girlfriends. The prevention of Domestic violence (DV) is important because family related violence occurs in a social context and has an enduring impact on a community. It is one of the foremost causes of homelessness and occurs frequently in homes where child abuse is present (New York City Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee, 2014, p. 2).
